Abstract

The Federal Computing, Information, and Communications (CIC) programs are investing in long-term research and development (R&D) to advance computing, information, and communications in the United States, and to help Federal departments and agencies to fulfill their evolving missions in the 21st century. This report summarizes the goals and objectives of the CIC R&D programs and presents a condensed view of some of the programs' FY 1997 accomplishments and FY 1998 plans, including the Next Generation Internet initiative. It describes the activities of the newly-created Presidential Advisory Committee on High Performance Computing and Communications, Information Technology, and the Next Generation Internet. The document includes a comprehensive list of Government personnel who are involved in the CIC programs.
