Martha K. Matzke supports the National Coordination Office (NCO) for Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) as Senior Technical Writer and Editor, responsible for developing the annual NITRD Supplement to the President's Budget and other publications of the NITRD Program.
Prior to joining the NCO staff, Ms. Matzke was an independent writer, editor, and publisher specializing in education, technology, and workforce development. She was the editor of a major 1999 econometric study of the U.S. unemployment insurance system commissioned by the Department of Labor. Ms. Matzke was the co-founder of Education Week, the nation's first and only independent national newspaper in the field of precollegiate education, and edited the paper for a decade. As an IT consultant to a national education organization, she designed and developed the million-member group's first online archive and national communications network. She has also worked in higher education, serving as adjunct professor of journalism at the George Washington University, Associate Secretary of Yale University, and Director of the News Bureau at Brown University. She started her career as a writer and editor at the Providence (R.I.) Journal-Bulletin.
A graduate of Brown University, Ms. Matzke has been a Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard University, the Shapiro Faculty Fellow at the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University, and a two-time winner of the Grand Award in higher education communications of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
