Internet Measurement Tools
- TReno (developed by Matt Mathis, PSC) which uses ICMP and TCP packets to measure throughput and congestion. See: http://www.psc.edu/~mathis/htmlpapers/inet96.treno.html.
- Network Probe Daemon - NPD (developed by Vern Paxson, LBL) which conducts end-to-end measurements across a representative cross-section of the Internet. It examines route stability, packet loss, queing levels, buffer sizes, and available bandwidth. It must be installed at remote nodes and utilizes traceroute, TCP probe, and tcpdump.
- Hop Congestion Tool is a tool under development by Eric Hoffman (Ipsilon) for NLANR. It incorporates traceroute and ping functionality to build a database of delay data along paths to a specified set of destinations, and visualizes the resulting data. See: http://www.nlanr.net/Viz/AllsWell.
- NetNow is a prototype tool being developed by Merit which provides realtime NAP and ISP backbone delay and packet loss performance statistics. See: http://compute.merit.edu/netnow/.
- IPN - Inter-Provider Notifications is a restricted site for sharing technical information among providers, e.g. outage reporting. See: http://compute.merit.edu/ipn_terms.html also: http://www.nlanr.net/COLL/caidance.html
- ASExplorer (developed by the Merit Routing Arbiter team) explores real-time AS routing topology and instability of the Internet. A GUI map shows providers connected by links reflecting their level of routing stability. See: http://www.ra.net/tools/asexplorer/.
- Netscarf collects statistics on individual networks and displays graphs on total number of bits, system up time, and interfaces links. See: http://www.merit.edu/net-research/netscarf/index.html.
- MIDS - Internet Weather Report provides a daily MPEG map that displays congestion hot spots and other conditions on the network. See: http://www2.mids.org/weather/iwr.html.
- Digital’s Looking Glass for MAE-East, MAE-West, and the Sprint NAP provides numerous statistical summaries, including a bgp summary, flap statistics, ping, trace, and others. See: http://nitrous.digex.net.
