FNC Related Collaborations
Collaborative Advanced Internet
Research Network - CAIRN
This continuation of DARTnet involves the cooperative research and development efforts of over 15 research groups, with a planned expansion to 25 participants by
year-end. The basic charter of the CAIRN project is to develop new
protocols and software, and to enhance existing software for advanced
Internet capabilities. The results of CAIRN's research will be published
as public domain information for review and use by
companies involved in developing IP related products. The CAIRN project
will consist of a nationwide, multi-provider ATM OC-3c private network
linking all research groups to enable on-line testing of the CAIRN results.
GII - Global interoperability
for Broadband Networks (GIBN)
Eleven pilot projects were approved at the February 26-27, 1995 conference of the G-7. The goal of these pilots is to demonstrate the potential benefits of the information society and stimulate its deployment globally.
Information Resources / Caching
- Global Caching Hierarchy
Under a grant from NSF, the National Laboratory for Advanced Networking Research
(NLANR) and several domestic and international partners are developing and implementing
an international hierarchy of information resource caches. The FNC is installing
a cache on one of its servers, and is encouraging the domestic/international development
and deployment of this technology. For a visualizaton of global caching traffic,
see: http://www.nlanr.net/Viz/Cache
Internet Security - FNC
Collaborations in Internet Security (CIS) project
This FNC collaborative effort is aimed at encouraging a sustainable process for
developing, integrating, and deploying security technology that is
interoperable at all levels of the Federal Government and consistent with security requirements and developments in the commercial environment.
Routing Arbiter Service -
RA
Under NSF sponsorship, Merit and ISI are serving as prime contractors for the Routing Arbiter (RA) project which provides routing coordination for the new NSFNET architecture. The RA service includes: Route Servers, Network Management System, Routing Arbiter Database, and Routing Engineering.
Statistics / Metrics
Statistics on Internet traffic and performance were gathered as part of the NSFnet
backbone service until the service was decommissioned in April 1995. Statistics
are still being gathered at the Federally-supported FIX-West facility, and to
a limited extent, at certain commercial sites. The following NLANR web page provides
links to Federal, research, and commercial statistics and traffic visualizations.
A survey of current Internet measurement activities is available at http://www.nlanr.net/metricsurvey.html.
WWW -NSF/NCSA World-Wide
Web Federal Consortium
This site provides "the working environment" to facilitate inter-agency collaboration, cooperation and transfer of WWW technology among the 16 member agencies. The FNC is co-sponsoring the privacy security track at the August 7-9, 1996 Webmaster Conference.
* Collaborations involving multicasts / MBONE are also planned. For
a discussion of traffic visualization tools and recommended MBONE topologies,
