FNC Mission

The FNC supports the goals of the CIC, particularly those related to building the national information infrastructure (NII). It also seeks to address Federal technology transition goals and allow the operational experiences of FNC agencies to influence future Federal research agendas.

The FNC works in collaboration with the National Coordination Office (NCO) for High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC) and the HPCC's Information Technology Committee. It also contributes funds to important Internet infrastructure organizations, such as the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), Internet Assigned Number Authority (IANA), and the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT).

The FNC provides a forum for the coordination of the following:

  1. Broad Interagency Internet programs, plans, budgets, and activities;
  2. Federal research, development, and education activities for the HPCC Program requirements that rely on the Interagency Internet;
  3. Interagency Internet activities with industry, academia, and other constituencies that transcend the HPCC Program focus but are interrelated and/or affected by the program;
  4. Interagency Internet with other Government initiatives, such as the National Information Infrastructure (NII) Initiative, which benefit from the Interagency Internet.
