President's Information Technology Advisory
Committee to Examine Federal IT R&D Investments and
Discuss Future Investment Priorities
|
The President's Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC)
will be meeting in Arlington, VA on Thursday, May 10 and Friday,
May 11 to examine specific aspects of the current Federal Information
Technology Research and Development Program and discuss the future
Federal role in capturing the full potential of IT to help our economy
grow.
The Committee will hold its public session on May 10 from 3:00 p.m.
to 5:30 p.m. at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Room II-555,
continuing its efforts to identify those key areas where the Federal
government should play an active role in information technology
(IT) research and development. Specifically, it will focus on the
four areas it identified in its 1999 report, Information Technology
Research: Investing in Our Future -- Software, High Performance
Computing, Infrastructure, and Socio-Economic Challenges. Over the
two days, the Committee will be hearing from both Federal agency
representatives and outside IT experts on the current Federal research
portfolio and how it has been influenced by the Committee's recommendations.
These discussions will also emphasize the investments that are needed
for critical new research in information technology. The Thursday
session will specifically highlight the Software research area and
conclude with a report from the PITAC Individual Security panel.
In addition, Representative Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY) will be joining
the Committee during this session for a round table discussion on
S&T issues, future investments in R&D and his plans as the new Chair
of the House Committee on Science.
On Friday, May 11, the Advisory Committee will continue its public
meeting from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at NSF in Room II-555, beginning
its day with a report from its National Security panel. It will
then shift its focus to the IT research challenges that are facing
the Infrastructure/Networking, Socio-Economic, and High Performance
Computing technology areas.
