Abstract

The Federal agencies that participate in the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) effort work collaboratively in fundamental, long-term research and development activities to assure continuing U.S. leadership in advanced computing, networking, communications, and information technologies. The NITRD agenda focuses on enabling Federal departments and agencies to fulfill their missions successfully in the 21st century. This Supplement to the President's FY 2002 Budget summarizes the major research areas that the NITRD agencies will address in FY 2002 and outlines long-term research needs in each area. The report also describes Grand Challenge National Applications of networking and information technology that will integrate in large-scale systems the enabling component technologies developed by the NITRD agencies.

Congress requires information concerning non-U.S. high-performance computing and communications funding activities. In FY 2001, DARPA was the only NITRD agency that entered into grants, contracts, cooperative agreements, or cooperative research and development agreements for information technology research and development with either 1) a company other than a company that is either incorporated or located in the U.S. and that has majority ownership by individuals who are citizens of the U.S., or 2) an educational institution or nonprofit institution located outside the U.S. DARPA funded IT research-related awards of $94,900 to University College, London (UK). In FY 2001, no NITRD procurement exceeds $1 million for unmanufactured articles, materials, or supplies mined or produced outside the U.S., or for manufactured articles, materials, or supplies other than those manufactured in the U.S. substantially all from articles, materials, or supplies mined, produced, or manufactured in the U.S.
