Federal Smart Cities and Communities Programs
Resource Guide

Rural and urban cities and communities across the country are motivated to use technology to improve the economy, create jobs, and enhance safety, through such applications as intelligent transportation, autonomous vehicles, smart policing, smart agriculture, and remote healthcare. The Federal Government can support state and local smart city and community projects that integrate digital technology into infrastructure and services through new innovations from R&D, security and resilience advice, data sharing, and progress tracking. The updated and expanded Federal Smart Cities and Communities Programs Resource Guide provides information about Federal resources that can support smart city and community goals. This Resource Guide will be useful to state and local governments, a wide range of industries, academic institutions, non-profits, and Federal agencies that have shared interests in implementing digital technology to connect, secure, and promote the health and well-being of cities and communities. The wealth of information spans 45 programs from ten agencies and will advance the vision of smart cities and communities. Notably, the Resource Guide offers a variety of information ranging from possible R&D funding opportunities, guidance, and tools. As an example, NASA, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, US Department of Agriculture, and National Science Foundation (NSF) have a joint effort in the Robotics Initiative 2.0: Ubiquitous Collaborative Robots. This multiagency program supports the integration of robots to assist humans in tasks. Another example found in the Resource Guide is the NSF’s Partnerships for Innovation Program. This program catalyzes public-private partnerships and accelerates the path of discoveries to the marketplace, which ultimately benefits society and America’s innovation. You will find all this and more as you scroll down through the different programs listed here.
