Goals

Engage with key stakeholders from government, industry, nonprofits, and academia to discuss the objectives and recommendations of the 2019 FTAC report, National Strategic Computing Initiative Update: Pioneering the Future of Computing, and to help pioneer the future advanced computing ecosystem in support of American leadership in science and engineering, economic competitiveness and national security.

Background and Context

The National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI) was launched by Executive Order 13702 in July 2015 to advance U.S. leadership in high performance computing (HPC). The NSCI is a whole-of-nation effort designed to create a cohesive, multi-agency strategic vision and Federal investment strategy, executed in collaboration with industry and academia, to maximize the benefits of HPC for the United States.

The national advanced computing ecosystem is undergoing rapid evolution along multiple dimensions due to the introduction of new and potentially disruptive technologies; increased hardware heterogeneity, data volumes, and software complexity; and the demands of new classes of application. To address this new environment, it is essential to update the 2016 U.S. Strategic Computing Plan in a holistic and synergistic fashion that involves government, academia, and industry. OSTP and the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Subcommittee on Networking and Information Research and Development (NITRD) created a Fast Track Action Committee (FTAC) in June 2019 to address this imperative.

The FTAC explored current and emerging challenges and opportunities, and it revisited the NSCI objectives with an overarching vision of realizing an advanced computing ecosystem that combines heterogeneous computing systems (from extreme-scale to edge-centered systems and beyond) with the networking, software, data, and expertise required to support national security and defense as well as U.S. scientific and economic leadership. Inputs were collected from the community in the summer of 2019 via an RFI and a Future Computing Community of Interest Meeting. The FTAC published its strategic objectives and recommendations in a September 2019 report, National Strategic Computing Initiative Update: Pioneering the Future of Computing.

This event will engage stakeholders from government, industry, nonprofits, and academia to discuss the strategic objectives and recommendations of the FTAC report, National Strategic Computing Initiative Update: Pioneering the Future of Computingand to help pioneer the future advanced computing ecosystem in support of American leadership in science and engineering, economic competitiveness and national security. The meeting will be virtual and will consist of invited talks and panel discussions that span various dimensions of the future advanced computing ecosystem, including computing (from extreme scale to cloud and edge), software and data, foundational and translational research, and workforce.
