SC21 Birds of a feather Session: From Exascale to Quantum and Beyond: The Future of Federal HPC R&D
Thirty years has brought so much in the way of new emerging high-performance computing (HPC) technology to the United States and the global community. Why is 30 years an important marker in the computing world? It has been 30 years since the HPC Act of 1991 was signed into law and since then we have seen an explosion of data, supercomputers faster than the creators of Star Trek could have imaged, revolutionary types of computing – exascale, quantum, and neuromorphic – and more! This Act led to federally-funded IT R&D and the formation of the Networking and Information Technology R&D (NITRD) program that would coordinate the R&D.
A Birds of a Feather session at SC21 will launch the celebration of these 30 years of innovation in R&D hosted by NITRD and led by Kamie Roberts, the Director of NITRD. It will be organized as a Town Hall meeting with questions presented to the panelists to get their respective viewpoints on, “what’s the future of HPC R&D?” The panelists will dive into what innovations are on the horizon in HPC, data, and applications and the R&D needed to get us there. How do we get the vast troves of government data out to the researchers and scientists, including those in underserved communities, who can advance solutions to tomorrow’s societal challenges? The panel will further explore STEM and workforce development opportunities and challenges across the full HPC ecosystem … so check out this Birds of a Feather session!
This BoF will bring insights as NITRD looks forward to another 30 years of advancing scientific discovery, technological breakthroughs, and innovation that are the engines for expanding the frontiers of human knowledge. These are vital for responding to the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. Join us to hear the discussion about these key HPC issues from the esteemed panelists: Jerry Sheehan – Assistant Director for Scientific Integrity & Data Access at the White House Office of Science and Technology, Dan Stanzione, Associate Vice President for Research at The University of Texas at Austin and the Executive Director of the Texas Advanced Computing Center, and Talitha Washington – Professor of Mathematics at Clark Atlanta University and the Director of the Atlanta University Center Data Science Initiative.
